Welcome from the Global Health Committee!

Thank you to my Global Health Committee for a wonderful meeting at the AOA House of Delegates! We are so excited for our upcoming project with AACOM International Collaborative. The overall goal is to provide a basic cultural resource for those providing osteopathic medical care globally. If your school has cultural information to share at the sites where you provide clerkships, please provide that information. Currently, we are collecting any information that students have about the country they rotated in so that we can put it all together in a comprehensive website for AACOM IC. If you have any information about the following topics please contact cosgpglobalhealth@gmail.com!

  • Traditional healing beliefs or customs particular to a region
  • Cultural acceptance of osteopathic manipulation at the site
  • Information regarding the demographic statistics of a region
  • Language etiquette
  • Nonverbal cues
    • body language
    • appropriate dress/attire for the country
    • eye contact
  • Treatment restrictions
  • Family and gender roles
  • Ecology of the site (do they have clean water, amount of time traveled to get to the clinic site, food security)
  • Current health landscape (pandemics/epidemics/outbreaks/unique microbiology)
  • Vaccine checklist resource link
  • Current health care access and contacts
  • Beliefs about death/dying
  • How to identify/treat culture shock
  • History
    • Political climate (link to state department website)

Also, encourage students to participate in the BIOMEA Poster Competition and Seminar on Monday, September 30th during OMED in Las Vegas! The International Seminar is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about how to get involved humanitarian medicine worldwide. The poster competition is focused on international research and outreach experiences of osteopathic students and physicians. Any student may submit an abstract but the competition is only open to SOMA members. Abstract deadline is Friday, August 23rd. More details about the event can be found by following this link.
