On behalf of the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents, welcome to the osteopathic family! The decision to become an osteopathic medical student is life changing and comes with great responsibility and privilege. By joining the osteopathic community you will learn and work alongside some of the most compassionate and competent physicians in the country who believe strongly in the four tenets of osteopathic medicine. These tenets include:
- The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
- The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
- Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
- Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
These tenets serve osteopathic physicians well in every specialty of medicine. You will find that the osteopathic family of physicians and students is full of dedicated, passionate leaders and strong patient advocates all working towards one goal: To provide the best healthcare possible to our patients.
Not only is patient care held paramount within the osteopathic family but the legacy of our predecessors remains strong in each new student through mentorship, encouragement and collaboration between students and physicians. The opportunities are endless as an osteopathic medical student and those who came before you sincerely care about your success! As an osteopathic medical student you join a dynamic cohort of medical students with abundant energy and talent that actively promotes the osteopathic profession across the nation and the globe.
The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) is the only organization that represents all osteopathic medical students. This is because COSGP is the official national leadership council of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) comprised of the student government/council presidents from each of the 31 osteopathic medical colleges in 44 locations nationwide. The council collectively serves as the liaison between osteopathic professional organizations and all students. An important goal of COSGP is to foster professional development and leadership among osteopathic medical students and advocating for them. With that in mind, I offer the 2014-2015 COSGP Theme: Learn. Share. Lead. Empower.
Becoming an osteopathic medical student has been one of the best decisions of my life, thus, I am honored to share my experiences with you regarding the path to becoming an osteopathic physician. If at any time you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact a council member of COSGP or an SGA/Council President at any campus. On behalf of COSGP, congratulations on all of your outstanding accomplishments and may your journey to becoming an osteopathic physician bring great fulfillment to you and healing to your patients.
